You do not need to be a financial expert to manage money well. Start with these seven numbers.
You do not need to be a financial expert to manage money well. Start with these seven numbers.
1. Know how much you actually spend
If you bring home $8,000 per month and spend $7,500, you are only keeping $500.
Start with:
Income − Expenses = Monthly Surplus
The bigger the surplus, the more money you have available to save, invest, or pay down debt.
2. Know your net worth
Add everything you own and subtract everything you owe.
Example:
Assets: $350,000
Debt: $200,000
Net worth: $150,000
Your salary tells you what you earn. Your net worth tells you what you have built.
3. Keep an emergency fund
A common target is around 3–6 months of essential expenses.
If your household needs $5,000 per month:
3 months = $15,000
6 months = $30,000
Think of it as your financial safety cushion.
4. Save part of every paycheck
If you earn $6,000 per month and save 15%:
$900 per month
That becomes:
$10,800 per year
Small percentages become meaningful amounts when they happen consistently.
5. Pay attention to expensive debt
A 25% credit-card balance can work against you much faster than many investments can work for you.
Know:
How much you owe.
What interest rate you are paying.
Which debt costs you the most.
Then decide where extra payments should go first.
6. Give your money different jobs
Do not look at $30,000 in the bank and assume all $30,000 is available to spend.
It might actually be:
$15,000 emergency fund
$5,000 taxes
$4,000 vacation
$3,000 upcoming bills
$3,000 available
A bank balance and available spending money are not always the same thing.
7. Check your numbers regularly
Once a month, ask:
Did my savings increase?
Did my debt decrease?
Did my net worth increase?
Did I stay within my spending plan?
And most importantly:
Am I financially stronger than I was three months ago?
Managing money like a pro is not about being perfect.
It is about knowing your numbers and making better decisions with them.
